Jasey Named Deputy Speaker of General Assembly

“Mila has a genuine understanding of the fact that caring about people and working tirelessly to shape the future of one’s community are at the foundation of public service,” said Prieto (D-Bergen/Hudson). “Having observed her commitment to education, housing and several other issues over the years, I have full confidence that she will serve the Assembly well as a deputy speaker.”

As deputy speaker, Jasey may preside over Assembly sessions when business takes the Speaker away from the floor. She also will play a key role in fashioning the Assembly Democrats’ long-term legislative agenda.

“New Jersey faces big challenges – from making sure every student is prepared to handle the cost and academic rigor of college to upholding the right to adequate housing and so much in between,” said Jasey (D-Essex/Morris). “Taking on this new leadership role will be a means of working with Speaker Prieto to ensure that the Assembly carries out its mission of building a better New Jersey.”

Jasey is chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, co-chair of the Joint Committee on the Public Schools, vice-chair of the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee and a member of the Assembly Education Committee.

During Jasey’s tenure in the Assembly, she has seen many of her initiatives signed into law, including the prevention and treatment of traumatic brain injury among student athletes, the Mortgage Stabilization and Relief Act, the Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit Act, the NJ Hero Act promoting organ donation, creation of solar renewable energy programs and measures addressing education concerns for New Jersey students at every stage of their academic lives. She was also a lead sponsor of the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act.

Prior to joining the Assembly, Jasey served as a member of the South Orange/Maplewood Board of Education for three terms, including two years as president.

Jasey’s advocacy and work have been recognized by the American Federation of Teachers-New Jersey, the New Jersey School Boards Association, the New Jersey Education Association, the Housing & Community Development Committee of New Jersey, the New Jersey Library Association and Garden State Equality.

A former public health nurse, Jasey received a bachelor’s degree from Barnard College, Columbia University and a master’s degree from the Pace University School of Nursing. She and her husband Neil are the parents of three adult children and have three grandchildren.

Jasey represents the 27th Legislative District, which includes the Essex County municipalities of Caldwell, Essex Fells, Livingston, Maplewood, Millburn, Roseland, South Orange and West Orange and the Morris County municipalities of Chatham Township, East Hanover, Florham Park, Hanover, Harding and Madison.
